Even one of their reps told me she would not recommend it for what I wanted to do. It is also the cheaper of the two solutions, even with a hardware warranty included.īarracuda does offer a cloud-based solution, but it can't do what their 410 will do. My boss and I are a bit more familiar with Barracuda and find it somewhat attractive to stay with that solution. According to what a technician from Barracuda told me, the agent contacts the 410 at the main office to lookup the policy information but will send the internet traffic out of the computer's default gateway rather than sending it back through the 410. With Barracuda's solution, we would have a 410 sitting at the main site and then put their remote agent on all computers at our remote sites, which would act as a policy enforcer (even for those laptops that are off network). The downside is the licensing cost and recurring charges for that licensing. It is certainly attractive since it is cloud-based, scalable, and I need not worry about hardware failure. The agent works on a per machine basis rather than a per AD user / group basis but would help enforce policy on those roving laptops. There is also an app for iOS devices that we can utilize but am not sure about Andriod. With OpenDNS, we would install their lightweight virtual appliance at the main site, and on the laptops that go in and out of the company, we would deploy their remote agent. I've researched OpenDNS Umbrella as well as the possibility of upgrading to a Barracuda 410 webfilter. There are quite a few tablets and smart phones connected wirelessly to the LAN at each of these sites as well. In addition to the 4 sites, we have outside sales people and executives that travel with laptops. We bought 50 seats a while back to cover them, and this was pre-Umbrella. I have split tunneling setup, so the 3 remote sites only have the protection of OpenDNS. ![]() I have 4 sites, 3 of which are connected-site-to-site with my main site, and the Barracuda sits at the main site just behind a Cisco ASA. I have a Barracuda 310 web filter whose energizer updates are about to expire.
